Three Years Later, Industry Puts Toxic Mold into Perspective

Features • February 9, 2004
Whatever became of mold? Only three years ago, newspaper headlines, fueled by overzealous trial attorneys and misguided scientific information, trumpeted mold as "the next asbestos." Since then, ...

OK, David. Let's talk a little about hysteria and opportunism. I recall the insurance industry and defense attorney claims that asbestos abatement would "bankrupt the nation". Were you part of that "common sense" effort as well? Neither the science nor the economics supported such statements then, and they will not do so now.

Would you like to discuss breast implants which, when removed, were found to be filled with mold? Would you like to discuss the labwork done in culturing mold from the saline solutions used to fill those implants BEFORE they were placed in those women's bodies? Would you like to live for a week in any one of those women's bodies now? Didn't think so.

Let's talk about the mold remediators. I'm sure you DO know which companies you like to use. I hope you DO like to use certified, responsible companies. I merely note that EACH AND EVERY ONE OF THEM DOES THEIR WORK IN HAZARD SUITS WITH PROTECTIVE MASKS. Why is that, David? The stuff is "everywhere", as you say. "Innocuous". OK. So explain the moonsuits. Why is it that such precautions are recommended by OSHA, if there is no problem? I assume you have a computer. Google CDC + aspergillus + aflatoxin. Then let's talk about "innocuous".

If the EPA has dispensed with worrying about mold, why was the property management company which housed EPA offices in Maryland successfully sued when they had their own environmental problems? Why were the DOT offices evacuated - TWICE - of 5,500 employees, and the lease paid by the federal government while the building sat vacated for years on end? Why was that, David?

And if Texas has overcome all this "hysteria" with "common sense", and the legal scene has "died down", then why do plaintiff cases flock to Texas for filing?

Actually, I'm actually glad that the Daubert Ruling wiped out the ambulance chasers. I'm glad to be rid of fraudulent remediation companys. What remains are dedicated, educated professionals who know you lie. Unfortunately for you, your policy holders are going to continue to find out that you lie. While you glory in having escaped a certain number of claims and suits through politicking and chicanery, that's all you have done - and at the expense of people's lives. While you sit and crow, we actually read the research. While you celebrate, we document. While you present us as isolated whackos, we are talking to each other. While you proclaim the whole thing a wash, we carefully track the successful lawsuits. While you write oratorical articles more than a little short on veritae, the Surgeon General holds workshops on indoor air quality and agrees to look at indoor mycotoxin exposures as more than simple allergic reactions.

So get ready, David. We're about to treat you to some sleepless nights and endless headaches of your own - and well-deserved, considering the devastation you would blithely wreak upon innocent and formerly productive people and their families.

Trust me, David. The insurance industry hasn't even begun to see the end of this yet. You can crow about your "alleged" victory all you want, but it will go the way of the "alleged" national disaster that was asbestos abatement. As long as I am hearing from victims of this poisoning who cannot breathe, cannot work, cannot even get out of bed, who live in constant pain, who write me to talk of thoughts of suicide because of the grinding and never-ending pain helped your alleged industry do-gooding, oh yes - you are going to be be hearing bad news, too. Couldn't happen to a nicer guy, by the way.

Sincerely,
Serena Edwards
