Parents ARE key to the success of graduated licensing, this is true! Many states including Washington State don't require parents to know or even understand what the GDL laws are. This is pretty unbelievable considering we are supposed to sign permission for our children to receive their licenses. Many parents view their children who get their licenses as an overwhelming relief as they do not have to cart their kids and friends around. All I can say about that is that I wish I had my son back to cart around. He was killed May 28, 2004 along with his best friend as a result of a single car crash. The driver was 16 years old, given a Camaro muscle car and basically turned lose and he was the sole survivor of the crash. He was under the GDL law but his parents didn't inforce it. Parents beware!!!! Absolutly forbid them to go in a car with a driver who is still under the GDL. If your child is the driver with the GDL, forbid them to have passengers!!! If you don't feel your state has a strict enough GDL, contact yoru legislative rep for some help in making changes. Believe me, your child's life is worth it.
