Thank you BOTH - this was highly informative and highlights just how charged this debate can be. Based on the back-and-forth, I think it will be quite a while before gays and lesbians are granted the same rights as their hetero counterparts - but I do believe that it will happen. One of these days, a majority will realize that allowing gays to enjoy the same rights and priviledges under "marriage" will not threaten their "family values" in any way. Or, an activist court could decide to make the decision for us, much like they did in Brown v. Board of Ed. Struggles for rights (womens' vote, minority vote) always take time to overcome the prejudices ingrained in our psyches by well-meaning but perhaps a bit misguided "family values" and "religious morality."
