Seems to me that people support the laws that are beneficial to themselves, no matter the impact on society. The problem with this mandate is that it forces a personal choice on individuals.
If you think this will decrease health costs, look at mandatory auto insurance laws. Everyone thought that if everybody was insured, the premiums would go down. Didn't happen. The individuals that were uninsurable risks cause everyone's premiums to increase because they are now in the system. The autobody shops like the laws because they can increase their prices. With a third party (the insurance company) paying for the damage, the insured doesn't care what it costs, as long as he isn't paying for it.
Let's pass a law that makes people pay their medical bills, or go to jail. I don't care how much they make or how many children they have. IT'S NOT MY PROBLEM, AND THEY SHOULD HAVE TO PAY THEIR WAY!
