Something sounds fishy here. If it was a practical joke why did the victim stress out? Were the "pranksters" laughing when they did this or were they threatening further harm?

Also, a back injury from getting duct taped? How can this happen if you are healthy - I can't see it unless you are fearing for your life and straining to free yourself.

We are not getting the whole picture here. Either the victim was under threat of more serious harm than a prank, something happened in addition to what we have here or he already had some level of back injury.
This guy is/was a refinery worker, generally they are pretty tough. I just can't see how something like this leads to PTSD & major back problems.
