As no one currently has any idea how the supposed flu pandemic may affect any part of the world, I can see where responsible citizenry would prefer to see their government in action, addressing a response to the potential dangers. And as citizens we should all engage our government to keep us informed of the possible dangers and resources available if such a disaster occurs.
I, for one, have not seen, heard or read a news story from any of the major news organizations regarding the pandemic in many weeks. The global warming issue apparently is a more serious potential disaster than a flu pandemic, at least to media editors. So for any steps to be taken is a step a better direction.
We, as citizens of this country, as a group, have not yet been able to understand that in any disaster, be it pandemic, earthquake, flood, tornado, hurricane and terrorist event, the government will be pretty much useless for several days. The U.S. organizations for disaster recovery, being managed and staffed by burerocrats, is so massive and fraught with constrictive regulations that it can take weeks to provide even rudimentary public relief. Local governments may be able to respond a little better, but none have the resources to provide for their own populations.
Essentially, in the event of any major disaster, we are going to be on our own and have to be prepared to take care of ourselves.
Businesses should have emergency supplies to meet logical local needs for staff employed by the firm. Families need to have emergency supplies to take care of themselves for several days.
We cannot count on the government for help. Look at our history, people in foreign lands receive better assistance from the US Government than its own citizenry.
"Pre Prepared", a simple but useful motto for these times.
