The problem here is the expansion of the practice to sophisticated, high cost components. Left un-checked, this practice will continue to escalate and become a factor in the rates decent people pay. The only way to stop it is to take the profit motive away.

There should be some kind of device that arms itself whenever a vehicle is entered without a key, and prevents the safe removal of the airbags. The bag will deploy in the thief's face and the horn will sound. There'll be nothing to sell and no motivation to do it again.
