The law is constipated and lacks the willingness to get tough on the FIRST offense, not wait until the second offense. How many times do we see people with multipe DUI convictions still on the road. That's because the courts let them. If society thinks this is a serious problem, the courts need to treat it as such. A 6 month suspension, 5 days jail time, and a $1,000 fine for the first offense is not onerous. It sends a clear message that there is a serious consequence.
