Han Valen you are right on. I've been making this same argument for years. Only I take it a step further - the State has no vested interest in recognizing any kind of union.

Get rid of the complicated tax scheme, institute a national consumption tax, and you get rid of the tax bit.

People who are married now have to go to court to settle up accounts when they split - they would have to do that if the State didn't recognize their union.

Insurance could be written in a more straightforward manner as it would only cover the individual and/or their children - no more worrying about spouses of any type.

When you take emotion out of it there is no reason for the State to recognize marriage. The divorce lawyers would have to find honest work to do, but I'm sure they'll find something.
