Yes, there are laws about minors handling alcoholic beverages, but they vary by state -- and one stops being a minor at age 18. In Michigan, someone under 18 can't sell or serve alcoholic beverages or tobacco. So, many restaurants won't hire minors as wait staff. The grocery store I worked at for 2 summers would hire minors as cashiers, but would put up signs at the end of their lanes saying "no alcohol or tobacco purchases," and they weren't allowed to be the only cashier on duty.

The employer in this case is guilty of really poor inventory control, but I don't think it should be held responsible for the CRIMINAL actions of its employee.
