Ofcourse the companies are against any federal regulation. Why would they be in favor of something that would take away their ability to circumvent the law or cut in to their profits from denying the valid claims of their own insured's? If we were ever to impose federal regulations of insurance, many insurance companies would notice a rapid decline in their annual profit margin. I think the simple fact that so many companies are vehemently opposed to federal regulation should raise an eyebrow or two. I believe that if the company is truly looking out for the best interest of their insured instead increasing their own profit margin that they would also be in favor of policing the industry and punishing the wrongdoers. It would truly convince the insured's that they are in "good hands" if they can also trust those "good hands" to conduct business in an ethical manner when they need their policy.
