Subject: RE: Eric's response
I don't believe that people stayed for Katrina because they were lazy, however some may have been. I am sure that their reasons varied depending on the individual situations. The poor & elderly remained due to expenses or the inability to have help in the evacuation, the ignorant stayed because they were not aware that the destruction heading their way would do anything other than it had in the past, & the thieves & druggies were most likely getting stoned & didn't really care but felt it might be an opportunity to watch their neighbors leave & then go loot their homes. But whatever reasons the people had for staying behind, those were their decisions & the circumstances they were in helped them to make the decisions they made. I do not fault anyone for making the decisions they do, but I do say that the choices you make will determine where you are & what you do with your life & those you share it with.
I came from a poor family in the sense of having money, but we were rich in love for each other & that love supported us & made us believe that we could do anything we wanted, although I never made it to college because we could not afford it & I was from a poor family that did not have credit & did not fully understand how to get grants & loans at the time, I knew I needed to help support my family so that we would ALL be better off.
In the neighborhood I grew up in - here in Houston - there were 3 homes where the illegal runners would drop off Mexican people to be forwarded out to places where they were given work, there was a ***** house & 4 homes that you could get drugs, all this & half the people there were on welfare & expected the State to pay their rent, to buy their groceries, to support the many children they just seemed to keep having (they acted as if they had nothing to do but lay up & screw out their brains) either because they were to cheap to use protection or were figuring another kid means more welfare dollars. I saw that all my life until I and my family were able to move away & now we see neighbors that mow their yards & trim their trees & wash their cars & have cookouts & spend time with their families doing things that support the positive things that are available to everyone, but first you have to want it & then you have to work for it...... or you can lay back & get what you got coming from those that are willing to give..... the choice is yours!
By the way, I still clip coupons to go shopping! I figure everything I save from one place can be used somewhere else to better fill the wants & needs of my family!
How about you????
Maybe everything was handed to you & it's no big deal, but to me, a discount is a discount even if you have to achieve something to qualify for it.
As far as rating practices go, I am all for discounts, if you have applied yourself & qualify for a discount, so-be-it! If you are an excellent student & qualify for a discount, so-be-it, but if you lay on your *** & whine because someone has something that you didn't get & you don't think it's fair, then get off your *** & work for it too!
