Density is a factor, but it cannot be 100% correlated due to the fact that high density populations have extensive mass transit systems. Many people in high density areas don't even own a car.

On the opposite end of the spectrum over 90% of people living in the lower density areas own at least one car. (percentage comes from an article I read a while ago. I am not 100% sure of its validity, but it is the best I have)
