Subject: Free health care
Why can't we figure out how to make sure all Americans can afford health insurance.
In the early 1990's, I worked with a single mother with a disabled son who was being paid less than $20,000 a year and could not afford to participate in our health plan at work. When she interviewed, the boss was very vague about how much she would be expected to contribute for the plan; he said "it wasn't very much." She accepted the job and then found she could not afford to join the plan. She became very unpleasant and resentful about this and created an extremely hostile work environment as a result.
