I don't know that it's ever been researched, but my experience has been that those that bought auto coverage online had no idea what limits they had. Their limits tend to be lower than they should be. (Of course people who bought their policy from an agent often have no clue either, but at least their limits tend to be higher.)
I haven't seen a lot of homeowners insurance that was bought online, as there haven't been as many companies jumping into that market. Lower margins and higher risk doesn't make companies want to take that jump.
