Because it is a loyalty thing. You sweat building a book; they brow beat you to produce; they spend hundreds of thousands if not millions from the revenues you produced for them so they can set up a competitive distribution mechanism.
How many remember that Travelers then owned by Citigroup spent $150 million setting up a website and marketing campaign? By the time they folded the project 18 months later, they had sold a mere 400 policies. Hows that for good value? But they still brow beat their loyal agents to produce while squandering that kind of cash. It's sort of a disconnect that they should be fawning over their agents capabilities where for relatively little expense their agents can out-sell even their mighty marketing campaign out of a single local office!
