Marianne, Thank you for your military service to our country. Don't be bullied by your mortgage company telling you that they will take your home, they won't, they don't want it. You are required in your loan contract with them to insure it, OR THEY WILL PLACE COVERAGE ON IT AT YOUR EXPENSE. This is called forced placed coverage. It does not give you ANY insurance coverage it will only pay off your loan in the event of a total loss. It is usually more expensive that any coverage you can find. The other problem is that your home did not appreciate from $26,000 to $88,000, your LAND did. Find out who dropped the ball on your policiy and get your money back from them you will need it to get a Citizens policy, which is probably your only option right now. As far as your current occupation with the state prioson system, I have done THAT and worse, no need to explain your woes about any state run administration. I do know the pay sucks, I did it for 5 years. If your background is medical, I would look to finding work at a hospital or county EMS, the pay is better and the clientele is better to deal with (most of the time).
As much as you don't want to hear it, you really need to get a Citizens policy, because without it you are really in a poor position if any of the 20 projected storms do hit your area.
