When we take all the emotions out of this argument, albeit likely impossible, this issue boils down to a rather heated debate over policy terms, the meaning of words, and proximate cause of the loss. Unless I am totally ill informed, hurricane is not a peril. To contend that the storm surge was not caused by wind seems a bit outrageous. It is just as outrageous to contend that purchasing minimum insurance will protect me regardless of what happens. I have always felt the insurance industry has done a poor job of informing the consumer about its products and the consumer has done an even poorer job of understanding what they are purchasing. Me thinks this may be the proximate cause of this debate.
