Actually, most lawyers are making a killing off of PIP as it is right now. Did you know that there are lawsuits being fought over disputes as small as one cent because the current PIP statute allows for any recovery by the medical provider to result in an award of attorney's fees? This then results in astronomical fee awards commonly between $325 to $400 per hour which can then be multiplied by up to 2.5 ($1,000 per hour). So, there are many cases where the medical provider sues over less than $100.00, recovers that amount plus 10% interest, but the provider's lawyer ends up with more than $50,000.00 for about a week's work. That is one of the reasons many people want to see PIP sunset. It is a boondoggle for overpaid doctors and their lawyers at the expense of the consumers who end up paying higher premiums to cover these ridiculous and outrageous fees.
