It is so nice to hear high salaried insurance company spokesman tell us we will save $250 per year on auto insurance if Florida No Fault sunsets October 1, 2007. I am a practicing chiropractic physician in florida and perform independent medical examinations on auto injury cases on a weekly basis. I also treat injured patients who have been in car accidents. So I have a conflict of interest so you may want to take my opinion with a grain of salt. However with that being said, if you no longer have PIP coverage as part of your auto insurance and you are rear ended, hit from the front or T-boned from the side and have to be taken to the ER for examination and x-rays who is going to pay the bill? If you have health insurance they may pay some of it. What if you don't have health insurance? A simple sprain/strain injury to the neck and low back with examination and x-rays at the ER could cost over $2,000. If you have a head injury, broken bones the bill will skyrocket from there. There goes your Mr. Insurance company $250 savings in one fell swoop. Perhaps $2000 is no big deal to the high salaried insurance spokesman telling you he can save you $250 but to most folks without insurance it is a huge bill. If you do have health insurance some of it will be paid but you will have your part to pay also. So the old saying be careful what you wish for should come to mind when some high powered insurance person is trying to tell you they know whats best for you the consumer. Sure there is fraud in the auto insurance arena but I can tell you after examining hundreds and hundreds of cases that those cases are the exception and not the rule. We can preserve the current no-fault/pip system and improve getting fraud out of the system.
