Working in the field, you should know that most of the time (~2/3), doctors win the trials. The juries do not always want the plaintiffs to get it all, as you say. Most of the time, they follow the court's instruction to not let sympathy, emotion or prejudice enter their deliberations. And please do not point out the extreme cases (there are those in every profesion) as reasons to throw the baby out with the bath water.
Like I emailed before, this system has worked for over 200 years. Despite its faults, it calls upon the collective wisdom of the jury after they hear the evidence presented. If the verdict is out of line with the evidence presented the lawyers are always able to move for a remittitur to reduce the verdict more in line with the evidence.
