Republican Gov. Mitch Daniels has named the acting commissioner of the Indiana Department of Insurance, Jim Atterholt, as commissioner. Atterholt, who has led the insurance department in an acting capacity since Jan. 10, is the new commissioner. Atterholt was a state representative (House District 86) from 1998 to 2002.
Since 2002 he has worked as the director of state government affairs for AT&T Indiana, responsible for developing strategies that furthered the company’s business objectives in the state. He was district director for Republican U.S. Rep. Dan Burton from 1992 to 2002. Daniels had named State Farm agency W. Harold Calloway commissioner, but shortly after the appointment Calloway turned down the offer to attend to a “business emergency” related to his agency.
