Brian D. First, a 13-year veteran of the commercial and captive insurance industry, has been named vice president, marketing for the Specialty Marketing Group (SMG) of Discover Re, the alternative risk transfer operation of The St. Paul Companies, based in Farmington, Connecticut.
“As a marketing executive in Discover Re’s dedicated captive unit, First will lead a team of underwriters in the development and service of corporate, agency, and group captive opportunities,” said the announcement.

“Brian First’s reputation and recognized alternative risk expertise in the captive arena make him an exciting addition to our team,” stated Brian Hanuschak, president of SMG. “We see great potential in combining our well-established platform of financial strength and flexibility with Brian’s proven marketing and underwriting talents.”
First formerly served as VP for the Hartford Financial Services Group, heading its national agency and group captive and rent-a-captive operations. Prior to joining The Hartford, he was senior vice president at Meadowbrook Insurance Group, where he was responsible for the development of new alternative risk programs.
