N.Y. State to Fund Local Flood Mitigation Projects

New York state is providing local governments with $650,000 for flood mitigation projects.

Michael Balboni, the Spitzer administration's deputy secretary for public safety, made the announcement Tuesday morning at the state's flood summit in Binghamton.

The summit brought together state and local officials to discuss ways to protect New York communities from floods and how to respond when major flooding occurs.

New York has been struck by nine floods in four years that were so serious they were all declared major federal disasters. Gov. Eliot Spitzer says the flooding cost nearly $500 million in emergency response and repairs to the public infrastructure alone.
