Each retiree was examined by the Railroad Retirement Board’s own doctors. The disability is an occupational one, unlike those given by Social Security. A man with hearing loss, for example would be granted such a disability.

The media is not reporting all the facts. To say that 1500 men who dedicated their life to round the clock outdoor work suddenly turned dishonest and invented ailments is outrageous.

This is simply wildly unpopular legislation that offered these benefits. The only crime here was the handful of men who took on other jobs while collecting their disability anuity.

Actually, your first assertion is incorrect. Most railroad employees applying for disability are not examined by RRB doctors, or by third party doctors contracted by RRB. The decision to request a third party examination is left to the discretion of the disability examiner, and may be required due to sparseness of the medical records submitted (not usually an issue in the LIRR cases), conflicting information in the submitted records, or other situations where the medical records supplied by the applicant himself or herself are not adequate to make a decision, whether positive or negative. A third party examination is the exception not the rule, largely due to the expense and delays inherent in the exam. The only exception is in psychiatric disability cases; the default is that all psychiatric cases must be seen by a third party doctor. This doctor is not actually an RRB employee, but is hired for the exam by a private company contracted by the RRB.

That’s right Jeff, the RRB bought & paid for with bribes, also known as campaign contributions by the unions to their bipartisan friends in the Con-gress.
