These public service reports always make the same inaccurate warning: “damage from flooding is not covered under most homeowner policies”.

With VERY few homeowners carriers offering private placement (non NFIP) flood coverage, NONE of them provide coverage for flood unless the insured (through their agent) has specifically asked for such coverage to be added as an endorsement.

Leading to the question this and other reports prompts: if flood damage is “not covered under most homeowners policies”, under which homeowner policies IS flood automatically included as a covered peril?

Since the answer is NONE, reports like this hoping to clarify coverage issues for the public should be more accurate — in the U.S., coverage for flood damage HAS to be requested and paid for if it is desired. Always.
