Yes. Congress went home over the holidays and tabled this decision until later, while children who were victims of Sandy slept in the very cold.

Really? do you think that would have or will impact the issue you note?

Guarantee you that the bulk of the 60 billion (that is even directed at Sandy-related storm damage and not some Alaska environmental issue, or the like) will go to city coffers for “funding” of contracts for HUGE infrastructure improvements (not repairs or assistance).

live by the water — destruction by the water. What did coastal residents and business expect would happen when large storm hits — and now the rest of us get to restore their ocean view? Sorry about being crass but ocean front is ocean front.

Wow, this comment has 20 dislikes already. People here (IJ comments) rip Florida for their weather rebuilding issues. Gordon just made a general statement that could apply to every coastal home/business. What is so offensive about that?

My question is why didn’t these “victims” have necessary and adequate insurance to cover a possible event? Oh, by the way, has anyone seen exactly what is in the $60B bill that was passed? How much of the funds are not “directly” related to the re-building of the immediate communities but are in fact pork projects that were inserted into the bill?

      Ken,
Who says they didn’t? I am guessing that you are not in the insurance industry. Otherwise, you would have know that flood is excluded under all policies and the Government put limits in how much coverage anyone can carry on a flood policy:
      Coverage Type Coverage Limit
      One to four-family structure $250,000
One to four-family home contents $100,000
      Other residential structures $250,000
      Other residential contents $100,000
      Business structure $500,000
      Business contents $500,000
      Renter contents $100,000

Do you believe these would be sufficient for everyone? Only the Renter contents is actually sufficient coverage for most policyholders.

Regarding pork in the bill, look it up. All bills are available online. Do your own research.

    How about excess flood insurance?
