New Jersey authorities said three New Jersey men have been charged with engaging in a scheme to submit fraudulent cell phone loss claims to Asurion Insurance Services.
The Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office said Thursday that the three men allegedly submitted $160,000 worth of fraudulent claims between December 2009 and August 2013.
The authorities said Peter Mancuso of Nutley, Roger Davila of Passaic, and Ceasar Berrios of Passaic are each charged with insurance fraud (N.J.S.A. 2C:21-4.6), theft by deception (N.J.S.A. 2C:20-4), trafficking in stolen goods (N.J.S.A. 2C:20-7(1)(b)) and conspiracy (N.J.S.A. 2C:5-2).
The prosecutor’s office charges the defendants submitted certified loss claims using fictitious names to Asurion. The claims stated that cell phones were lost or stolen. The defendants then allegedly sold the replacement cell phones over the internet.
The prosecutor’s office said one of the defendants boasted about the sales and other aspects of the scheme on his Facebook page.
The defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
