Fire Sprinkler Requirement Bill Dies in New Jersey

January 27, 2014

Fire sprinklers will not be required in new homes in New Jersey.

Gov. Chris Christie on Jan. 21 allowed a bill that made the rule to die.

The measure would have applied to newly constructed homes. It would not have applied to mobile homes or homes not connected to a public water system.

Supporters said it would save lives.

Opponents said the requirement would drive up costs and make it more difficult for residents to build homes.

Just how much could $1 per square foot increase a home's cost? It might even be less considering ecomomies of scale.
