Hank, the right to privacy ends where the pedestrian’s body begins. Like it or not, speed zone cameras encourage behavior modification – if you don’t want to pay the fine, then drive the speed limit.
There is on particulary long school zone in my community just north of Seattle. The wide boulevard runs almost a mile past a grade school, middle school and a high school. Before the traffic cameras were installed there were, on average, 3 serious injuries involving pedestrians and speeding drivers. In the 3+ years since the cameras were installed, there has been only one injury and that was at night when the school zone was not in force. Like it or not, the deterrent factor works.
Blair, I am in complete agreement that the offense should count against the offender’s driving record. To the arguement that these devices are simply a “cash grab” I would offer the proposal that the offender be allowed to appear before a judge and accept the license points for the trade-off of the fine being waived.
Wait for it… wait for it… “These cameras are denying me my right to privacy.” How ’bout you slow the heck down?!?!?!
If it was really about the children’s safety the offenses would count against your record and be reflected in your insurance premiums.
Instead the government hides their new revenue stream under the guise of child safety. How pathetic!
