THe whole fiasco proves once again the crazy healthcare insurance system we have in this country. We really need to move to a single-payer system, where it does not matter where you are employed, and everybody is covered.

Geno’s and Pat’s are decent at best and are tourist traps. My personal favorite is Daleassandros. Tony Luke’s is still pretty good, but stay away from his microwaveable sandwiches…yeesh.

There is nothing wrong with protests. This one keeps religious freedom issues in the public eye a little longer. The light needs to continue to be shined on the fanatics on the left, who feel all optional activities that they promote or agree with should be funded from the pockets of taxpayers.

Yes Libby, my life is pretty boring – After 40 years of marriage sex is an optional activity – her option. Also in all those years I’ve never had a need for STD medical treatments and she has never had an unwanted pregnancy. And my kids are all now middle aged and not one has ever moved back into the basement nor are any of them on government assistance. All this without having insurance coverage for optional activities.

In addition, birth control is not always prescribed simply to prevent pregnancy. Further, it isn’t free, the employees earned it as part of their benefit package and now their employer is saying they cannot have it. Meanwhile, they have their 401K plans invested in the drugs they stand against. Not to forget all the Chinese manufactured products they plaster their shelves with. A country who mandates State funded abortion. Hobby Lobby is a complete joke, I’ll go to Michaels if I or any of my daughters need craft supplies.

You say Republicans aren’t into handouts. Why do they continue to support handing out money hand over fist to their corporate overlords and the uber rich? Corporate welfare is a huge problem. And, yes, Dems are also guilty of it. Republicans support more strongly, though. Odd for a party who doesn’t believe in handouts.

But Captain, the corporate tax rates are too high. Maybe if corporations like GE didn’t have to pay so much in taxes, they wouldn’t keep shipping jobs overseas. If we just reduce the tax liability to zero for great corporations like GE, then they’ll stop shipping jobs overseas.

This is very true. It’s their right to protest how and where they want and I will stick up for them and their right to do that. Even so it is very telling that they choose to protest HL in of the SC. To them the SC and the state represent the answers to all the problems by expanding in scope and HL represents all the evil of corporate and/or religious policy/theory.

Ironically while it’s there right to protest as they wish, they in fact are protesting the rights of employers to compensate employees as they wish.

Religion has no place in the business world. That’s my position. Say what you want about the ACA, but it is the law (right or wrong) and to cry foul based on religion is wrong. They are a for-profit company and they should have to follow the law like everyone else.

But freedom of religion is also law and in the constitution. So what happens when two laws collide and one is a constitutional law (not to mention a legislative act as well)? The constitutional one wins, at least in this case. I don’t expect any kind of consistency with this justice system.

Your argument/position isn’t effective because the other side can take the same exact argument. The fact that the only recourse HL had was to use their religious freedom act card is the real shame. It shows how messed up our courts are that they won’t recognize individual rights.

A law that is not just should not be followed, so the whole “it’s the law, deal with it” stance is disturbing to me. I refuse to bend to authoritative decrees that I oppose. The constitution even gives m and all citizens that right through jury nullification.

Why should they pay for lung cancer treatment for smokers? Or diabetes treatment for overweight people? Or pregnancy expenses for someone promiscuous and not responsible enough to use birth control?

The answer? They shouldn’t. We should have universal healthcare with the option to buy up to a “cadillac” plan if that’s what you want. Then maybe everyone could stop bitching about birth control &/or abortion. I thought we had a separation between church and state. That’s slowly being eroded by the teajadist fanatics.

Libby; I don’t understand your point. Do you believe that birth control coverage and abortion coverage should be in a Cadillac plan and not in the plan mandated by the government? If so, then you would not have a problem with what Hobby Lobby is willing to offer.

No. I think it should be included in the universal plan. The cadillac plan would allow you to visit private doctors &/or hospitals that were not included in the universal plan. That’s how it’s done elsewhere.

It’s not hate, just the truth of double standards from the party of “do as I say not as I do”. If we are against employers paying for certain types of birth control, then how do home makers pay for theirs? They aren’t working in the private sector, yet the spouse’s employer has to pay for their birth control. Shouldn’t they have to take their slippers off and go to work and earn theirs? Or are they entitled because in many conservative households, the practice of momma bear staying home so she doesn’t cheat on papa bear is the norm plus she’s an additional tax write off. Mamma bear could go to work while she has school aged children and be home in time to be home when the cubs come home from school. This would be against the rules of submission and quite frankly, would be unacceptable in the eyes of the conservatives.

On the post above, I am not sure I really understand your point. But you did say “If we are against employers paying for certain types of birth control, then how do home makers pay for theirs?” A point of clarification that I think is driving this issue, most are not against employers paying for types of birth control, the issues is that employers shouldn’t be forced to pay for them.

Those in the Bible Thumping regions are forced to procreate for various reasons. Prom night, Johnny-Lee Ray wins his first race at the local dirt track, or just the fact that a “man must sire as many offspring as he has seed in his groin and women are the vehicle to get him there.” The result is generational poverty, trailer park living, and brain washing from the right. Had abortion or many of these forms of birth control become available or acceptable, places like Appalachia and Texico would be able to pull their weight a little more. They wouldn’t have the low illiteracy rates, or rely heavily on the government to subsidize their lifestyle including the military as their “only way out”. Hobby Lobby wouldn’t even be a career because these people would have more jobs skills. There is a direct relationship between unwanted pregnancy and the aforementioned perils of society, and it all begins in the back room of a double wide after Johnny-Lee Ray wins that race. Right there on the checked flag colored bed sheets. It would happen in the back seat of the racecar but I don’t think they have those. As they get older, much like mice and cockroaches, they multiply exponentially and this vicious cycle continues. Soon, the Koch Brothers have what seems to be an infinite source of foot soldiers to “fight the good fight” with the blessings of the leaders of the Mega Church culture. This infighting in our country is perpetuated by said offspring of this region and will surely hold us back while “emerging markets” move light years ahead.

It is not a civil right of the rich and the employed, they pay for it. Poor people do get free medical care – Medicaid. Remove the profit motive? Kiss new cures, better treatment and improved medical facilities goodbye. Even the socialized medicine countries can provide quality treatment thanks to the profit motive.

I certainly understand the sentiment behind that stance but I strongly disagree with it. Removing the profit motive remove all sources of quality control. My solution would be to increase the profit motive to allow free competition. The healthcare market is far from a free market. The amount of regulations, licensing, legislation that effects it is driving up the price. Then there are gov’t supplement programs that don’t have a price sense so health insurers are able to charge as they wish which drives up doctor fees.

They both affect each other. Health insurance will only pay “x” amount, so the physician is forced to over-treat to make a living. Because he over-treats, costs increase and insurance premiums go up. Take the profit motive out of the equation with healthcare by having a universal plan where doctors are paid a salary based on the amount of education they have and amount of hours they work. There will still be plenty of for-profit companies to do R&D on treatments and cures. These companies are not paid by doctors.

Not all uninsured people qualify for medicaid. I know plenty of people that work 40-50 hours a week and have no employer provided health care and don’t make enough to purchase it and raise their families. Yet they work, pay taxes, contribute to society and are decent God-fearing, patriotic citizens. Again, empathy is not so prevalent with your crowd.

And just what do you mean by “Even the socialized medicine countries can provide quality treatment thanks to the profit motive.”?

Most people don’t need medical insurance. Generally accident insurance (very cheap) is adequate unless a person has a genetic disposition towards major illnesses or conditions. Most people can pay for doctor visits out of pocket which is much less expensive than insurance premiums. Even with my “blessed” life my childhood friends and I grew up blue collar in the 50s and 60s without medical insurance and there was no Medicaid. Dad and mom bought our glasses and fixed our teeth, paid for doctor visits and births. Mom got our vaccinations at the Salvation Army. We had one old car Dad worked on to keep running and an old house he bought for $2,000 ($40 a month payments). Dad drove trucks and belonged to the Teamsters but no medical benefits back then (Jimmy stole all the money). Perhaps our generations are too far apart to understand each other. My point is that where there is a will there is a way without the massive redistribution of wealth that we see today. I think that I am a better person for my parents being largely self reliant. I have plenty in common with and empathy for poor people.
Oh and socialized medicine countries treat their citizens with the latest drugs and equipment developed by “for profit” companies.

You’re totally insane. Do you actually think the world operates now like it did in the 50’s and 60’s (which is, by the way, when I was brought up)??? It doesn’t. A family of 4, with both parents working minimum wage, makes maybe $2,200 take home a month. Out of that there is rent/mortgage, transportation, food, school supplies, P&C insurance, clothing, maybe a movie or a pizza once a month as a treat, and NOT MUCH ELSE. The days of yesteryear are over, pal.

Do you even know how much an office visit is for someone without insurance? Over $100 and that’s not with any tests, or labs, or x-rays, or meds.

You are totally out of your mind if you think the working poor are better off paying for their own medical care. You have been living the cushy life for too long and are totally out of touch.

I know 2 people that have had to declare bankruptcy because of medical bills. They were working class people that happened to get sick (cancer for one) and have a debilitating injury (back fusion for the other). Tell me that’s the way it should be in America. It’s a crying shame and you should be appalled.

Instead I hear “the poor have medicare” and “it’s cheaper to pay your medical bills yourself.” You have no idea what you are talking about.

A lot of doctor practices are starting to not accept any insurance and their rates are very low. My father is a physician and his partner recently branched off to start doing this, I actually worked for him while I was in going through college. Not accepting medicare or medi-cade (along with private insurance as well) has allowed him reduce all of his prices dramatically.

That is because the true cost of having a “free” option out there destroys competition and raises prices because they don’t have any price sensitivity.

Doctors should be paid on results and not just the number of treatments. That’s how the rest of us get paid. It’s great that as a physician you know a lot of important things, but technology has changed the landscape in the medical industry. I’m ok with physicians delegating lower level and preventative treatments to PA’s, but it’s time for them to work on cures and not profit generating narcotics that only maintain one’s health and not resolve the problem.

I am not talking about compensation just procedure prices. And I put free in parentheses to show that I understand it is not free, in fact that was my point. It has a very real cost but to the gov’t and the people using those alternatives it’s “free” (taxpayer money) which means no price sensitivity, which leads to doctors/insuers able to increase prices without any pushback. Why pushback on prices when you’re not the one paying for the service?

Actually, LiveFree, the government programs pay on a fee schedule type of system. In some cases (hospitals and home health) there is a set payment for a specific diagnosis & treatment plan. If the provider can treat for less than the payment, they make money, otherwise they actually lose money on that patient.

I worked in healthcare billing. There is no way a low income person without insurance would pay for an office visit out of pocket. It is just too expensive. One office visit could feed a family of four for a week.

OK math 101. One family $400 a month health insurance (cheap), $4,800 a year premium, 3 Doctor visits, let say $500 per visit $4,800 Vs $1,500 the difference will buy them groceries for more than a few weeks. When a major healthcare event occurs take out insurance (remember you can’t be turned down). Please don’t be like Libby and take parts of my posts out of context. If I had the option I’d take the $10,000 a year my employer and I spend for my health insurance, place into a medical savings plan and pay for my own doctor visits.

I think health care should be free to the consumer. Yes, I am for universal health care, not insurance premiums paid by the consumer.

I understand that the VA is an example of this gone wrong. However, I contend that it is not the entire system – only selective parts of the system. The VA clinics and hospitals in Kentucky work well. Appointments and emergencies are handled quickly and efficiently. This is common for all those using the VA in Kentucky, not just my family. It is possible to have universal care successfully.

I think it’s appalling that the greatest country on earth can’t provide it’s citizens with the healthcare they need and deserve, when there are many other countries that have been doing so successfully for years. I don’t understand the republicans stance against it. It just doesn’t make sense to me.

You don’t get it, FFA. We all pay taxes. If they did a better job on where and how they spent that money there could be plenty for this. In addition, it would be cheaper to do it this way and nothing out of your pocket. How much do you spend annually between premiums, deductibles, and co-pays? That would be money in your pocket. You just have to think outside of the box. Hard for we old dogs, but it’s possible.

And just how has the ACA helped that? By driving up insurance premiums more than any previous point in the history of health insurance? I don’t understand how you can be so damn blind in your support of the ACA and your filthy Socialism.

Here’s the thing I don’t hear anyone address…. Under the current system, when the working poor go uninsured, and they have a catestrophic event (I’m thinking of a friend and my brother in law who both had massive strokes), the taxpayers pay for their care and now SS disability. That’s pretty socialized, right?

How is having mandated insurance worse for the taxpayers than our paying the high cost of catestriophic care, after the fact? Under a single payor system we would have likely been paying the $100 offic visits and $30 per month generic blood pressure meds… much cheaper for the taxpayers. Both of these guys have probably incurred $250,000 in medical expenses since their strokes.

Both of these men were around 50, healthy weight and in overall good health. Neither had health insurance therefore neither had regular medical care.

One of the men lost his home, declared bankruptcy and ended up moving in with his elderly mom. The other is so poor, he rents a room and can afford nothing else. He would be eating cat food if it weren’t for friends and family stepping in, but it’s hard as there’s no end in sight and he’s now only 53.

Absolutely, CG. It would be cheaper and everyone could get the care they need, and indeed are entitled to by being an American citizen. It should be the FIRST priority in the budget. Our tax dollars could not go anywhere more worthwhile.

And it’s interesting to note that Canada’s middle class is doing better than ours, even with those “evil socialist” policies. Maybe because they don’t have the “trickle UP” economics given to us be the Lord of the Conservatives, Ronald Reagan and his cronies.

All of this protest/boycott stuff reminds me of Amendment 2 in Colorado. All of the Hollywood Elite were going to ‘boycott’ Colorado. But of course when in response someone suggested ‘boycotting’ the elite’s movies and music and Rob Reiner started screaming BLACKLISTING and MCCARTHYISM!!

Lesson: Boycott or protest something conservative, that’s your right as an American. Boycott a liberal idea, your engaging in naziism, fascism, blacklisting and all other unsavory forms of suppression.
