I have no idea, but man, this really is horrible. I used gloves when I put lye down the drain (worked great, by the way) — I can’t imagine how bad it is if you actually drink the stuff, even a small amount! I hope the kids’ throats aren’t scarred for life.
Article does mention that they were foam cups. Unless it is a trace amount that got splashed on it I would think the cups would dissolve or be noticeably damaged.

Lye would eat right thru foam cups, that should be an easy one for the lawyers.
