CNA Financial Corporation announced that, effective September 14, 2009, Gary Owcar has been appointed president and chief operating officer of CNA Canada. He will be responsible for executing profitable growth strategies in the global insurer’s Canadian operations.
Owcar has worked in the insurance industry since graduating from college. He spent seven years progressing through the claims ranks into supervisory roles for three East Coast insurance companies. In 1980, he joined The Chubb Corporation as a Regional Property Claims supervisor. For the next 19 years, he was responsible for international assignments in Brazil and Asia. During this time, he extended his leadership reach beyond the claim function to running multinational operations. Among his many accomplishments, he grew Chubb’s Asia Pacific operations from four small offices to a cohesive zone of 13 offices in 10 countries with a highly diverse, integrated team.
Owcar joined CNA in 1999 to lead its global operations, and his responsibilities expanded to include all of standard commercial lines. In 2006, he went on to pursue two start-up ventures in consulting and training.
Tim Szerlong, recently named president of CNA’s Worldwide Field Operations, noted Owcar’s abilities, and indicated that he would “provide great leadership to the CNA Canada team.”
