A.M. Best Appoints Ribeiro and Sutherland to Its Asia-Pacific Operations

A.M. Best announced the appointment of Jose Ribeiro as managing director – Asia-Pacific, and James Sutherland as commercial director – Asia-Pacific.

As managing director, Asia-Pacific, Ribeiro will be responsible for raising the profile of A.M. Best’s brand in the region and for overseeing the commercial development of its business throughout the region. Ribeiro will report to Roger Sellek, chief executive officer, A.M. Best EMEA & Asia-Pacific. Ribeiro’s appointment was effective on Jan. 4, and he will be based in Hong Kong, subject to all necessary approvals.

A.M. Best said that Ribeiro has a deep understanding of the re/insurance industry gained from a career spanning more than 28 years. Between 2002 and 2015, he held the roles of head of Argo International, CEO of Generali in Brazil, director of International Markets at Lloyd’s, and CEO for LatAm & the Caribbean at Willis. In addition to being a certified EU actuary, he has an MBA in International Management and a master’s degree in mathematics.

Sutherland’s appointment was effective on Jan. 18, and he will be based in Singapore. In his capacity as commercial director, Sutherland will be responsible for developing strategic commercial initiatives to further reinforce and enhance the interests of A.M. Best across Southeast Asia, Australia and New Zealand. He reports to Ribeiro.

With a career extending more than 35 years, Sutherland has extensive international experience of the insurance industry acquired in roles spanning broking, business development and e-trading. Most recently, Sutherland was CEO of Qatarlyst, an e-trading company he developed from its inception. He also worked for the Qatar Financial Centre Authority as a director, and in that role was responsible for promoting Qatar as a regional financial center and for securing the establishment of international insurers with the QFCA. Prior to 2009, Sutherland worked at Lloyd’s for nine years as head of strategy and operations and more than five years each with Lombard Continental, QBE Indonesia and Sedgwick UK Risk Services Ltd.
