Marsh Canada Appoints Lay as President & CEO; Garner Named Chairman

Marsh has appointed Chris Lay as president and CEO of Marsh Canada, succeeding Alan Garner who takes on the role of chairman, effective July 1.

Both Lay and Garner will report to Robert Bentley, president of Marsh US and Canada.

Lay brings over 30 years of leadership experience to the Toronto-based role, most recently as president of Marsh’s Global Captives business. Since joining Marsh in 1984, he has held several senior roles at the firm, including head of Global Sales, CEO of Marsh’s UK and Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) Corporate business and deputy CEO of its UK Retail business.

As chairman, Garner will focus on deepening Marsh’s engagement with clients, prospects and insurers in Canada. He will also serve as Marsh & McLennan Cos. Country Corporate Officer for Canada with responsibility for coordinating strategic initiatives across all of MMC’s operating companies including Guy Carpenter, Mercer and Oliver Wyman.

Joining Marsh in 1988, Garner has taken a leadership position in the advancement of enterprise risk management and alternative risk financing solutions within Marsh Canada. He held the position of head of Marsh Canada’s Eastern Region before being appointed chief operating officer in 2002. In 2004, Garner became president and CEO.
