A bill that would create an insurance fraud unit dedicated to investigating and preventing insurance fraud has been introduced in the Indiana Legislature.

Under HB 1374, which was introduced by state Rep. Mike Smith, a Republican, the fraud unit would be a division of the Indiana attorney general’s office and would be funded by a tax on insurance companies according to the amount of premium they write in the state. The unit would have authority to investigate and prosecute cases.

HB 1374 is being considered by the Indiana House of Representative’s Insurance, Corporations and Small Business committee.
