American Modern, Other Insurers Make Ward Top 50

Midland Co.'s American Modern Insurance Group made the annual Ward's 50 Benchmark Group of best-performing insurance companies.

Cincinnati-based insurance consulting firm The Ward Group also honored Cincinnati Financial Corp. and Western & Southern Financial Group for their five-year financial performances.

The American Modern Insurance unit of Amelia, Ohio-based Midland Co. made the list of top property-casualty insurers for its five-year average returns on assets, equity and revenue. It also met the safety and consistency levels Ward's requires of all companies to be considered for its top 50.

Ward's also honored Cincinnati Insurance Cos., part of Cincinnati Financial, in the property-casualty segment, and SECURA Insurance, based in Appleton, Wis.

Ward's ranked Cincinnati Life Insurance Co., also a unit of Cincinnati Financial, and Western & Southern Life Insurance Co. among the top 50 life-health insurers.

The objective of Ward's analysis is to recognize the Top 50 companies that excelled at balancing financial safety, consistency and performance over the previous five-year period. Ward's aims to honor the 50 top property-casualty insurers and the 50 top life and health insurers for safety, consistency and performance over the past five years. It examines about 3,000 property-casualty insurers and 1,000 life-health insurers before narrowing down the list.
