A former Ohio funeral home director has been charged with 43 counts accusing him of stealing up to $200,000 from clients who paid ahead for their funerals, Logan County officials said.
Mark Van Horn, 55, of Bellefontaine, was arrested Friday after a Shelby County grand jury indicted him. His family is trying to sell Van Horn Funeral Home, with locations in Lakeview in Logan County and nearby Jackson Center in Shelby County.
Van Horn signed a statement to state insurance officials March 10 that he did not forward premiums from 33 customers to two insurance companies for the funeral coverage from 2002 until last year, the state Department of Insurance said last week.
The criminal charges date back to 1990, but most cover pay-ahead funeral contracts sold from 2000 to 2005.
The clients were paid back, but prosecutors said that doesn’t prevent charges.
The Ohio Insurance Department revoked his limited license for selling the funeral insurance.
The state Board of Embalmers and Funeral Directors revoked Van Horn’s funeral director’s license effective March 30, and the licenses for the two homes as of April 18.
