I totally agree with “it’s the deed”. I also believe that dog owners are the real problem, as opposed to the actual dog, no matter the breed. Watch the Dog Whisperer and learn!!!!

State Farm does all these studies because they are one of the few companies that don’t underwrite by breed. ( if that has changed I’d love to know) . Adverse selection gets them more than the lions share of dog bite claims from breeds like Pitt Bulls, Rotts and Chows.

“Pit Bulls,” actually Staffordshire Terriers, are by far the most populated breed in the U.S. It’s a numbers game. The more there are of a certain breed, the better the likelihood of an incident. Bottom line: Keep your dog on a leash, socialize it well and don’t take it to an off leash dog park/beach if it doesn’t behave well with other dogs.

I have an American Staffordshire Terrier of 10 years who constantly licks the face off of my 9 month old nephew and has never shown any signs of aggression towards any human. He’s not the best with other big dogs so unfortunately I can’t take advantage of off leash dog parks and beaches. It is what it is. THIS IS FROM A REALIST!

Where are you getting your stats? I went to the AKC site and according to their 2011 numbers, labs are the most REGISTERED dog, with American Staffordshire Terriers coming in at 72. Even taking into account unregistered dogs, I doubt there are enough to overtake labs as #1. That said, why don’t we hear about all the lab attacks, since, as you suggest, it is a numbers game.

Rounding out the top 5 are German Shepards, Beagles, Golden Retrievers and Yorkshire Terriers. That’s right… I think it was just last week that I read about a vicious Yorkie attack. And the next day I heard about a yellow lab licking a person to death.

Just admit it. Certain breeds are more prone to viciousness than others. Just like some breeds are retrievers, or herders, or racers.

What % of ALL people that own dogs register them with the AKC? If it’s more than 5%, I’d be shocked!!!!

renoscs You must not be a dog owner, lol! You only register your dog with the AKC if you have a FULL BLOODED breed of dog whom parents had AKC reistered papers. If you have ANY breed of dog that doesn’t have AKC (or UKC) registered parents, you can’t register with these “Full Blooded k-9 clubs! There is a HUGE difference between having registration papers for your dog to breed & show your dog. AKC provides pedigrees of the bloodline.
You register your dog, regardless of breed, pedigree or no pedigree, PERIOD, with your local county office.
And the percentage of registered dogs threw the county offices is WAY over 5% buddy!
Ignorance is bliss! Educate yourself on the topic before you comment

so Ohio actually acts on some animal liability legislation. when will they finally decide that other vicious animals(exotic tigers, lions, bears, monkeys etc)should also have some restriction? this state of all of them has had the worst experience and needs to make sure exotics are no longer kept at home either!

Common sense, perhaps… Unfortunately, the majority of dogs that attack are owned by individual who lack common sense!

@Realist….if you are going to site statistics…please include accurate data. ROTS AND PIT BULL MIXES COMPOSE 67% OF DOG BITES. It’s not just pit bulls. So, please learn to read the whole article next time. The upbringing of a dog and training of a dog are what make a dog. Not the breed.

    Racism is the PITS.

While I can understand looking at the “deed” versus the breed, studies have shown that Chihuahua and Spainiel breeds are the the ones to bite the most. Both common dog breeds so as a % of the dog population they are higher also. It isn’t the propensity to bite, but the viciuosness/severity of bite that is usually taken into consideration when underwriting a specific breed. As stated, MANY more severe bites from rots, pits and other larger breeds(many times used for security of a premise)than you have ever seen from a lap dog breed.

Years ago the meter reader knocked on my door and said he needed to go down to my basement. I told him to follow me and I headed down the basement stairs. When I reached the meter the meter guy was nowhere to be seen. I went back upstairs and found him lying on the floor in the fetal postion and my parrot was sitting on the guy’s back looking very pleased with himself. put Jeffrey in his cage and we completed the meter inspection. A few days later I got a letter that said if I couldn’t better control my vicious dog (which was crossed out and the word “parrot” was hand written in)services would be cut off. I no longer have a parrot but if I did I suppose I would see surcharges galore.

More people are killed and injured by drunk drivers, so, what’s the point?
