“With per capita annual income of $15,383…”? Good Lord! All of a sudden, movin’ to the swamp seems like it was a great idea. Specially when you net it down by 25%. Unless maybe everybody in Gary is stealin’ from each other; gonna have to supplement them meager paychecks with something, I guess.

“…bigger police departments are a lot cheaper to run,” but “…can also mean a loss “of texture and nuance”. Texture and nuance? Who they? Like Bert and Ernie?? Come on now; how much of either can exist when folks have to live on $11k a year? Unless ‘texture’ has to do with the broken sidewalks, and ‘nuance’ means my Uncle just got remarried.

If all cities, counties and states would stop pensions for politicians and cetain appointed positions where they get full salary for life, they could afford better police departments and other services.

I drove thru Gary, Indiana once (by accident), and I could not believe I was in America. Abandoned and crumbling buildings make it look like a war zone. After reading this, glad I made it thru without getting robbed or carjacked.

I work for a regional carrier that has a sizeable amount of HO4s in Gary. EVERY DAY I hear the gripes from our adjustors about the amount of theft claims that come from this area. I just assumed it was a nice little midwestern town…(it has it’s own song in “The Music Man”!) I assumed it was a fluke, but WOW it makes sense now. I’d never think of Indiana being “high crime”, but when you factor in the lack of police and the fact that Gary is just minutes away from the south side of Chicago, it makes sense.

Andrea you really thought Gary Indiana was just a “nice little midwestern town”? What planet have you been living on?

Well to be fair, it’s Indiana… It’s essentially the Bermuda Triangle of the United States.

Gary is a really tough city and has been for many years. It will take a lot more than a beefed up police department to make the city truly livable.

I agree that stopping the huge pensions for certain positions would be a step in the right direction for the entire country. It is pretty sad that some people can retire before the age of 62 and make as much or more money than when they supposedly worked for a living! If I were to retire now, it would be with $0 income until I hit the right age and then I would get the paltry Social Security and money from my own savings to live on.

My daughter Holly Amber Womack – Elischer has been missing from Gary since Oct. 4th 2012. Gary PD has done little to find her. Waiting for her to turn up dead. We have asked Gary PD to ping her phone that has not happened, we asked to them to get her phone records and bank records they have yet to get results back since they only subpeonaed her information just befor Thanksgiving. Her ex-husband threaten her and now she is missing. What is diffucult as well is that their son is still with the father. Get with Gary PD. Very scary and dangereous place to be.

I live in Gary and i have been here all my life, and as bad as people make it sound, it really isn’t. I mean crime and killings are everywhere, just not in Gary. If our people cared about the city instead of abusing it, it would be a great place to stay. The police don’t care about Gary they spend most of their time flirting with the women at the Gas stations.

I was a Gary resident for years, I was never involved in anything illegal . My husband and I both worked in Gary, paid our taxes and voted in every election. We loved our city, and always defended our city if we heard anyone say bad things about Gary. A few years ago our lives were forever changed. Someone with a grudge against us decided to wreck our little piece and quite and shot up our home shoot both myself and my husband. Although our wounds did eventually heal , mentally we no longer felt safe in our beloved Gary anymore. And to make matters worse, our home was looted and burned. Every since that horrible night I can not come in Gary unless it is absolutely necessary. Crime ,unemployment , gangs, and poor people coming from other areas are a few of many problems that are forcing good law abiding, tax payers and voters from the city and living in other cities and spending their money there too.

I lived in Gary all of my life until last year and I am 50. Gary needs business like Walmart, Movie Theaters, Shopping Malls, and stores on the lake front. It has a beautiful lake front. Gary has some beauty to it but the media only tells about the crime which most probably is drug related.
