Top Illinois Republicans Back Immigrants’ Drivers’ Licenses

December 5, 2012

Top Illinois Republicans have announced their support for providing driver’s licenses to illegal immigrants.

House Minority Leader Tom Cross of Oswego and Senate Minority Leader Christine Radogno joined former GOP Gov. Jim Edgar in supporting proposed legislation on the matter.

The plan awaiting a Senate floor vote would allow the 250,000 illegal immigrants who are already driving the chance to be tested, licensed, and buy insurance.

Uninsured immigrant motorists cause $64 million in damage claims each year.

Edgar joined Democratic Gov. Pat Quinn and Senate President John Cullerton two weeks ago in announcing support for Cullerton’s legislation.

Cross and Radogno weren’t there. Radogno blamed a scheduling conflict and a spokeswoman didn’t know Cross’ position at the time.

The bill is SB957.
