No, no, no! School property is to be insured by the school, not the students.

Actually this is no different than the way school have basically always operated. If you lose a textbook you will pay to replace it. If you damage a textbook you pay to replace it. But instead of it being a book that can be dropped and be fine you have a device that if dropped will break. Contrary to popular opinion it is not the responsibility of a school district to be purchasing that kind of insurance themselves. Having gone to Farmington schools myself I can tell you that it is a district that is not going to be spending one dime more than it has to. I remember my junior year of high school the district rationing paper to the point that you had to submit all copy jobs to someone the day before you needed it so that no waste would occur with a teacher copying something wrong. So I wouldn’t expect a school district to purchase a hardware protection plan because that is what this is and I would have been shocked if Farmington in particular had purchased this kind of coverage for all their students. Especially considering the number of devices that they would be insuring. they would be looking at nearly 200k in expenses for that. And you can bet that the district doesn’t want 2-300 hundred stolen ipad claims showing up on their property policy each year. that is a good way to have your premiums as a district go through the roof.

Where are the districts getting the money to do this? Our schools are broke.

Some schools are. Maybe others are not, if Farmington watches their pennies as noted by the previous post, they have probably been able to buget for them. Also, as the article said, they are “replacing textbooks” so they would be using some of the money previously spent on textbooks.

There is a very simple solution here, and it is not for parents to spend a penny insuring these items. Under MOST homeowners insurance policies, there is an Additional Coverage which provides a limited amount of protection for damage to property of others in your care, custody & control. This Additional Coverage is typically limited to $500 or $1000, depending on your policy, but that is enough to cover most of these items. Check with your homeowner’s insurer to make sure before you spend any money on this!

Mary is correct that homeowners policies do cover this but there is a problem with this solution. The coverage ussually has a deductible and many companies are going to $1,000 to $2,500 deductible which would provide coverage but not for this size of an item. Another problem is many of the howmoewners contracts have specific reasons why a loss is covered and the carelessness of youth is often not one of them.
