Michigan Woman Ordered to Stop Unlicensed Insurance Sales

The Michigan Department of Insurance and Financial Services (DIFS) recently ordered Irene Bess of Detroit to cease and desist from the sale of insurance in the state.

At the company’s request, DIFS conducted an investigation of activities involving United Services Automobile Association (USAA) policies being purchased with fraudulent information. The investigation discovered that accounts were being created with false social security numbers and/or false bank account information for the purposes of obtaining a proof of insurance.

A search of IP addresses used in the scheme led to a Detroit residence owned by Bess. The investigation concluded that Bess was engaging in activities regulated by the Michigan Insurance Code, without a requisite license, and had violated the insurance laws of this state.
