Minot Acquiring Flood Protection Properties

Minot, N.D., has acquired more than 60 percent of the properties needed for a flood protection project that will begin construction next year.

Finance Director Cindy Hemphill tells the Minot Daily News that the city has bought out 99 properties and is attempting to buy another 65. Some homeowners don’t want to sell and the city might have to go through eminent domain.

The city earlier made buyout offers on about 125 properties needed to maintain an existing levee system. Between those purchases and the current ones, the city has closed on 183 properties.

The June 2011 Souris River flood caused an estimated $700 million in damage in Minot. The Army Corps of Engineers this year plans to study long-term flood protection for the city. That could cost $1 billion.
