MMC Working to Locate Employees, 1,300 Reported Safe

September 14, 2001

Jeff Greenberg, chairman of Marsh & McLennan Co., issued the following statement yesterday: “Approximately 1,700 of our people – from Marsh, Mercer, Guy Carpenter, Seabury & Smith, and MMC Enterprise risk – worked at the World Trade Center. It appears that about 700 of those people are unaccounted for.

“As of Sept. 13 at 3:00 PM EDT, our control center here at 1166 reports that 1,300 of our colleagues are safe….We have 1,700 employees who worked at the World Trade Center, and we believe that between 50 and 100 people were scheduled to visit on the day of the attack. I’m gratified to see that the number of people reported safe is increasing, but I am saddened beyond words at the number of people who are still unaccounted for.

“Our center, which has been staffed around the clock by shifts of 30 to 40 volunteer operators from across MMC, continues to receive calls from people who were working at the World Trade Center or who have information about people who were there. We are doing our utmost to confirm the reliability of all reports we receive. If you have any information, please contact the center at (212) 345- 6000. We continue to canvass local hospitals and compare names of their patients with our lists of colleagues.

“At 8 AM, Sept. 14, we will open a Family Assistance Center at the Millennium Hotel at 145 West 44th Street in Manhattan. They may contact the Family Assistance Center by phone at (866) 679-5976. We also have counselors available here at 1166 to provide support and assistance for all MMC employees. At our operating companies, disaster recovery plans are being implemented as we expected. Our operations outside of downtown New York are very little affected, and we are responding to our clients professionally and completely.”
