This is the worse, yet! Formaldehyde not only causes permanent damage to respirtory systems, it is carcinogenic. The FEMA attorneys knew that, that’s why they discouraged testing. Without the test results, they can argue it’s just the plaintiffs’ looking for an easy buck. With the test results and the published facts from EPA and OSHA – FEMA hasn’t a leg to stand on. Ad, have you been in the area? Don’t throw stones, I live 50 miles West of NOLA and compared to lots of people, the damage to my home was very little. I have had a roofer replace my roof, but not able to find a contractor to do interior repairs and replace windows. Luckily, I had only wind damage and cannot imagine where I would be living if I had flood damage.
Same problem with pre made cabinets. They’re all being dumped in the US because we are the only country (including China) with standards low enough to accept them. There are a lot of kids sitting in the same kind of trailer as temporary class rooms. You may not like government, but someone has to regulate.
A friend of mine who had 6 ft of water in her home in Arabi moved into a FEMA trailer with her daughter and could not live in it because of the odor and burning of eyes and throat, little did they know about the damager of formaldehyde. They were lucky, if you want to call it that, and had friends that took them in and they are still living with friends. Their home was gutted and as much as they could afford has been done.
For you critics and AD, NO they had no flood insurance, because their agent and the mortgage company told them they did not need flood insurance because they did not live in a flood zone. The home is 3 feet above ground and it is an old home that never flooded, not even in Betsy. They cannot afford to continue with repairs all funds have been depleted
and are waiting on Road Home. Yet they still have to pay mortgage and insurance premiums, which have tripled, even thou they cannot live in the home. They would like to buy another home, but cannot aford two mortgages payments. Sad part of this is that there are many, many people in this position.

Of course there should be a class action lawsuit as the people of N.O. love free money. They seem to sue everyone for everything thing. I agree AD, all of them are sitting on their butts doing NOTHING but thinking of new ways to sue or screw the local and federal govt’s for free money. There’s no way these people actually want to work for a living.

I can only speak for myself, but the truth of the matter is that it sounds as if we’re still on the same mindset in New Orleans, rape the system.
I believe that formaldehyde is in many of items found in newer homes. I believe it is put into wood products and carpets, perhaps as a preservative. Also was found in vehicles at one time, and perhaps still is. We’re constantly exposed to it, but now New Orleanians who still haven’t moved into housing are sick and dying. My belief is that the people that are sick and dying would be sick and dying regardless of the trailers.
I lived in a new mobile home in 1974. My daughter was born in 1976. She was recently tested for allergies. Formaldehyde was one she is allergic to. I remember when we first moved into the trailer- the fumes. Our eyes would burn. Didn’t know at the time it was dangerous. Also for the person wanting to know why people are still in trailers after two years- After hurricane Isabel in 2003 we lost our home and moved into a apartment for almost 2 years until our home was rebuilt. I say get a suit going.
I think that your comments are asinine Mary & AD. While there will always be people trying to “rape the system” as you so eloquently put it – there are also people who aren’t. I personally work my *** off so that I can take care of myself & my family. And if I find that this caused any of the repiratory problems that my daughter or I have been having since living in the trailer – I would most likely join a suit against the companies that sold the trailers to FEMA. Not to “rape” anyone – but because respiratory problems require medication that costs hundreds of dollars a month if you have to pay for them outright. And while we have health insurance now – there isn’t a guarantee that we will always have this coverage. If I change careers or open my own business – insurance will change. And many insurance companies do not cover pre-existing conditions. So perhaps you should consider all sides of the story, and all the different types of people involved, next time you decide to make such a degrading generalization.
CC, you have to overlook what these two say, I don’t know much about AD, but Mary B is always on the opposite side of the fence! It is ashame the judgement of some of these people. They put everyone in the same category without knowing all the facts!
