So, what will they do to me when I show up as ordered for federal jury duty without their required papers, but a current valid State ID? You don’t want me on any jury, I’ll vote for acquittal no matter what.

We need a national ID system as a first step in strengthening our national security. The Feds are putting this off because they will embarass the Obama administration as to the number of people in this country that will not be able to obtain a valid REAL ID card.

If it were such a matter of national security maybe W should have spent some money on making it happen long ago rather than getting a bunch of our soldiers killed in a senseless war that cost us billions of dollars. Now the states can’t pay for it and neither can the feds. Thanks W- you were a real winner!

Maybe if health insurance were such a national problem Bill and Hillary should have made it happen a long time ago like they promised. Now, millions of underprivileged americans are dying because they can’t get proper healthcare. Thanks Billary, you were a real winner.

A common misconception is that REAL ID is a “national ID” – that’s just plain wrong. REAL ID sets standards for state motor vehicle agencies to better verify that you are who you say you are – and to make sure that personal information in the state record system remains secure.

States may choose to comply with the program or opt out as some have done. REAL ID compliant driver’s licenses and IDs are only necessary for three purposes – entering into nuclear power plants, boarding federally regulated aircraft (ie passing through TSA checkpoints) and entering certain federal buildings.

While, requiring a REAL ID compliant ID or other federally accepted ID (ie a Passport) will be enforced for boarding aircraft in 2013, the requirement for federal buildings is only for certain high security buildings and not federal court houses.

They are stalling until 2013 because they are waiting (and waiting, and waiting, and waiting) for this biometric computer-chipped monstrosity to become “politically sustainable” — which means they will shove it down our throats as soon as there’s an appropriate crisis to exploit.

We didn’t want it originally, nor the rebranded version PASS ID, we don’t want it now, and we won’t want it in 2013 either.

If you think identity theft is bad now, just wait until the government foolishly mandates a single point of vulnerability via easily-exploitable RFID chip technology.

Oh, and imagine how much the government will enjoy their new power to walk through a crowd with an RFID reader and automatically generate a database file with all of the identities and personal information of anyone within the reader’s radius…

“Security” is great, but at what cost? Both literally and to privacy and freedom?

Matt, Fear can be a powerful motivator, but this RFID chip in REAL ID compliant driver’s licenses is bordering on paranoia. There is no RFID chip, nor will there be, in REAL ID compliant driver’s licenses.

I would direct you to the law, PL 109-13, or the REAL ID final rule.

Requiring a national ID card is contrary to our individual freedoms. I have no desire to enter a nuclear power plant, most federal institutions and I certainly object to the security measures currently in place for air travel. These measures at best are inconvenient and largely ineffectual. It makes just as much sense as rebuilding every aircraft in existence to make it impossible to access the cockpit once the aircraft is in flight. Living in the USA is still preferable to living anywhere else, but at the rate we are going, there will be no difference between us and the countries where dictators rule and freedom of private citizens is outlawed.
