Do you think that maybe all the newly unlicensed drivers who can no longer get insurance have anything to do with this increase? With the stricter identification requiremetns, too many formerly licensed AND insured drivers are now on our roads and highways!

I doubt it because there are companies that will insure drivers that do not have a DL.

But what are the “stricter identification requirements” that you speak of? I have not heard of any state cracking down on how much ID you need to get a DL.

I’ll point out that while the number of un-insured drivers may be 1 in 7 but that your odds of being hit by one is much higher. While some people may be un-insured unintentionally, there are those who’s driving history is so bad that they cannot afford to purchase insurance. And those people are the dangerous ones as they are commonly incapable of learning from their mistakes and continue driving even when they shouldn’t.

doesn’t matter if it’s voluntary or involuntary … uninsured drivers involved in accidents cause all of us to pay higher premiums

The numbers suggest that minority and/or Hispanic drivers are more likely to be uninsurad.

What might cut down on these numbers would be laws that would allow for a deduction of the financial responsibility limit on liability payments to any uninsured claimant – then they might learn something about responsibility.

God forbid they be held accountable Bob. They wouldn’t have gotten into the accident if you didn’t get in their way…

They’re all waiting for the O’Bama-car plan. Auto premiums are too high, so instead of addressing the actual driver of the costs of the premium (i.e. uninsured drivers), he’s going to subsidize it with Federal Tax dollars.

The relationship between those uninsured for health and uninsured for automobile is the same: they both drive up the costs for the people that actually pay for coverage.

WOW! for starters, here is the link to the Oregon DMV regarding documentation requirements for getting a driver’s license. AND the same requirements apply to renew a driver’s license. If you think this only applies to illegal aliens, think again. There are any number of legal US residents who are unable to provide the proof required to renew a license they’ve had since age 16!! http://www.oregon.gov/ODOT/DMV/driverid/idproof.shtml#LName

Dear Realist: What is with the mostly Democrats uninsured comment? Note that Oregon has the strict ID requirements for licensing and mandatory car insurance….and guess what? We are a blue state! Not to make this political, but isn’t it the Republicans that want Government to stay out of everyones personal business and legislate less. Unless of course it means money out of their pocket, right?

All states need a law which prohibits the uninsured from collecting non-economic damages (ie pain and suffering etc)in any accident they are in.

Some states have this and it lowers the cost of insurance for responsible drivers.

Here in Fla. I have to show more ID to renew my license than the current President has to show to the people who elected him..
