I wonder if there is a relationship between the WC results and the poor economy. Could it be that medical and indemnity amounts tend to rise when the economy is bad? Do injured workers try to stay off work longer to milk the system as long as they can? Do treating doctors order more tests and not release patients as quickly because they are paid better than with the health carriers? My guess is the poor economy is one of the culprits.
WC really depends on the state you are in. However, I can tell you that the reforms set in place by the last Governor have been undermined to a great extent by plaintiffs counsel.
I wonder why Texas Mutual continues to thrive in the State of Texas. Possibly, it is because they take a dim view of WC fraud and aggressively prosecute it when they uncover someone milking the system. They also have a good network of treating physicians who know they have to do the right thing with a patient on treatment, release back to work. Their Loss Control also works with clients to help them prevent injuries by identifying hazards in the work place. After a time, the experience mod declines and that saves the employers money in the long run.
