We have a new scam in this country. Able bodied workers who run out of their 99 weeks of unemployment are now filing with Social Security for Disability and getting it. This is designed for freeloaders who don’t want to work and can get on the government dole from now on.
An unusually off-the-mark comment from a normally well-focused reader. I think if asked for an objective opionion as opposed to a subjective feeling, most disabled workers would express pleasure in being hired in the first place, in view of sometimes insurmountable challenges. Certainly my bro in a wheelchair felt that way at Gallagher (but NOT at or for Aon, who did everything possible to stymie him).
But now I digress.
I think it’s staggering that disabled workers have a 6% chance of being injured on the job, nearly 3 times higher than non-disabled workers. That deserves attention.
Although – as my brother would have said – he didn’t have that far to fall, and he was already sitting down. RIP, old boy. UR missed.
Sorry about that Reality. I am afraid I was reacting to all the bad stuff going on in this country. I am surprised injuries among the disabled is going up. Did we not pass a Disability Act some years ago to help the disabled get into work with ramps, improved bathrooms with wheel chair access etc? The article mentions more falls. I suppose injuries are related to the work environment the disabled person is in. In our business, if a disabled person can sit behind a desk, they should be able to do as much work as anyone else. Some of our carriers do employ them and they do well in their jobs. It is the freeloaders who can work that won’t work that are the problem in our society currently.
I resent that comment. My husband is having to file for SSD as he has stage 4 lung cancer, and his likelyhood of survival is 1%. Not everyone filing is a deadbeat!
Best wishes for your husband and your family, I.L. Must be disabling for you just getting up every day with a new challenge. Be strong!
